The Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS) is the premier cricket venue in the Middle East and, since its 2009 inauguration – celebrated with the Australia versus Pakistan ODI series – has played host to a number of international matches, mainly involving Pakistan.
It is a modern arena with excellent sightlines, with the mjority of seating offering shade. There are also private indoor viewing galleries and an array of corporate boxes for special guests and dignitaries. The athletes are right at home in spacious dressing rooms.
Some of the stadium’s records to date include Shahid Afridi’s five-wicket haul taking 6/38 v Australia; Jacques Kallis’ highest individual score (in a Test) of 135 not out v Pakistan; and the highest score by a team, 317/5, South Africa v Pakistan.
Apart from cricket, the set up of the playing field can also be adjusted to suit a wide variety of sports including football, rugby and boxing.
CAPACITY: The stadium holds 25,000, with all seats offering excellent uninterrupted views of the field. This can easily be expanded to 30,000.
FACILITIES: Superior athletes’ dressing rooms and facilities, an extensive media centre, plush viewing galleries for special guests, royalty, VIPs and dignitaries.
We agree with former Australian captain Steve Waugh that the set-up and facilities at DICS are “sensational”. Spectators are brought closer to the action through the help of LED scoreboards and a 80sqm digital replay screen. Fans and athletes are in for a treat at DICS. As Dubai Sports City continues to expand the stadium is often difficult to access but whether you like a good live act in a great atmosphere or you’re crazy for world-class cricket, you can be rest assured you’ll have a ball.
