Swiss tennis star Stanislas Wawrinka will arrive in Abu Dhabi next month for the Mubdadala World Tennis Championship full of confidence following a stand-out 2013 season.

Wawrinka is positioned at a career-high world No8 and recently made the semi-finals of the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The 28-year-old, who won one ATP title this year, also reached his first Grand Slam semi-final in 2013 when he defeated Andy Murray in the last-eight of the US Open.

Wawrinka can look back on his season with a great deal of satisfaction and he is hoping to carry the same form to Abu Dhabi when he lines up alongside a host of the world’s best players.

“I have achieved many things this year that I am very proud of and I hope to continue this momentum through to Abu Dhabi in December and into the 2014 season,” said Wawrinka, who will be competing in his second Mubadala World Tennis Championship, his first since 2010.

“The line-up in Abu Dhabi this year is really strong and after the season I’ve had it seemed like the ideal time for me to play the tournament again.

“We’ll all be looking to see where we stand against each other after the off season.”

Wawrinka will open the action at Zayed Sports City on 26th December when he takes on world number three David Ferrer in a rematch of their World Tour Finals clash earlier this month.

On that occasion it was Wawrinka who prevailed, defeating his Spanish opponent 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 and with the Swiss winning the last two encounters, their head-to-head record now stands at 7-5 to Ferrer.

“Ferrer is a great competitor and will certainly be a tough opponent for me, but my two recent wins against him give me confidence going into the tournament,” Wawrinka commented.

“It’s always close between us and...I know we’ll both be giving 100 percent – I’m sure the crowds in Abu Dhabi will be in for a great opening night.”

Six of the world’s top ten players will compete for the title in Abu Dhabi with Wawrinka and Ferrer joined by world number one and current double Grand Slam champion, Rafael Nadal, and his fierce rival and world number two, Novak Djokovic.

Wimbledon champion and world number four, Andy Murray, and world number ten, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, complete the strongest line-up in the tournament’s history with all three previous champions returning to the UAE capital in December.

The unique combination of a ‘winner takes all’ prize of $250,000, the world’s best players and a championship format that takes fans on day one immediately to the equivalent of a Grand Slam quarter final guarantees explosive action.

The annual Mubadala World Tennis Championship takes place from 26th to 28th December 2013 at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex, Zayed Sports City.

For fans that don’t want to miss out on the tournament’s strongest line-up yet, tickets are on sale from and in selected Virgin Megastores, or call 800 TM UAE (800 86 823) with prices starting from AED 50 for children and AED 100 for adults.
