Learn from the pros: Warriors Rugby Academy Masterclass
With the rugby season getting back into full swing – both here in the UAE and in Europe – here’s a great opportunity to give your youngsters an early grounding in the skills of the game.
Ex-Wales and Lions winger Dafydd James and ex-Scottish international scrumhalf Rory Lawson will be handing out some special tips at a mid-term rugby masterclass at the Warriors Sports Club and Academy.
The class will be running for three days in total – Sunday, October 13; Monday, October 14, and Tuesday, October 15 – from 09:00 to 12:00pm on the Indoor Pitch at Dubai Sports City.
Brett Wastie, from the Warriors Academy, said: “The mid-term masterclass is a great opportunity for players from different schools and clubs to come together and receive dedicated coaching and advice on specific and fundamental areas of the game.
"They can develop their knowledge and skills of those areas that can be taken back to their teams where they can then be used to make a valuable contribution on the field of play."
Dafydd James earned 48 caps for Wales between 1995 and 2007 – scoring 75 points – and he was also part of the 2001 British and Irish Lions Tour to Australia. Rory Lawson made 31 appearances for his country between 2006 and 2010.
Wastie added: “The Masterclass will be led by IRB-qualified coaches, with a few guest appearances from ex-professional players who will be coaching some modules within the masterclass, so children can be sure they are receiving the very best advice and current top-level skills and drills to fully develop their game.”
The cost for attending the threeday course will be Dh500 and is open to children of all abilities from all clubs and schools in the age groups from under-nine to under- 13.
The payment must be made on the first day by cheque or cash. Children should wear suitable rugby clothing, and arrive at 08.45 with a bottle of water and a gum shield/mouth guard, and they will be ready for collection at noon.
The mid-term masterclass is open for registration on the Warriors website at www.warriors.ae – the content for the course can also be found there.
In addition, the club is actively seeking players at under-nine, under-10 and under-12 age groups to boost the number of players participating in the local junior rugby leagues and tournaments.
Warriors Sports Club was established in Dubai to provide opportunities for children to play a range of sports in a combined club atmosphere. The club is based at the Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club, which is a lovely venue for families to relax and enjoy the food and beverage facilities on offer.
The Academy runs alongside the club and offers professional academy-style coaching courses that are open to anyone, and not just for Warriors Sports Club members.
In addition to the Mid Term Masterclass, the Academy currently also runs a weekly rugby academy session with James that is based at Jebel Ali Primary School.
This is a great opportunity for young children to learn the basics of the game from IRB coaches as well as players who have played at the highest level in the game.
