The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has unveiled a new-look Champions League format for the 2014 tournament, with Middle East and East Asian teams kept apart until the semi-finals.

Therefore, the likes of the UAE’s representatives – league champions Al Ain, runners-up Al Ahli, third-placed Al Jazira and fourth-placed Bani Yas – will avoid the likes of reigning champions Guangzhou Evergrande until the latter stages.

UAE coach Marcelo Mendes was in a fighting mood after his team secured a safe passage to the semi-finals of the Samsung Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup in Dubai with a 3-1 win over Mexico.

Impressive though the result was, the UAE spent much of the game in a war of attrition against an aggressive Mexico side. The competitive nature spilled over, seeing two Mexicans – Erick Marin and Angel Rodriguez – given red cards while Haitham Mohammad was also dismissed after a scuffle with Marin.

Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to win the Ballon d’Or because he has been the world’s most outstanding player during the course of 2013. But he shouldn’t win it like this.

FIFA’s sudden decision to extend the voting deadline for their prestigious annual award appears to be little more than a cynical and blatant attempt to court votes for the Portuguese star following his bitter dispute with ‘governing’ body chief Sepp Blatter (yes, the apostrophes are intentional).

UAE coach Marcelo Mendes warned his team that they need to sharpen up despite defeating Morocco 3-2 in their opening game of the Samsung Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup in Dubai.

Following a gruelling 14-hour flight from Brazil, the UAE were largely on top of their North African counterparts but allowed them to twice come back into the game by giving away sloppy goals.

Two strikes from Hasan Ali and a tap-in from Ali Kalem were enough to eek out the win but Mendes was left unimpressed by their start to the competition.

The UAE will be looking to put their disappointing World Cup experience behind them when they face off with the best teams on the planet on home sand at the Samsung Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup.

Taking place at Jumeirah Beach, the Emiratis have been given a favourable Group A draw that has pitted them against Switzerland, Mexico and Morocco, avoiding giants Russia and Brazil.
