The sporting spirit and generosity of the local motorsport community was aptly illustrated when a bunch of friends, including a top rider, clubbed in to help former UAE Sportbike champion Hussein Al Kooheji return to the saddle to compete in the second round of the 2011/2012 championship at Dubai Autodrome tomorrow (Friday, 21 October 2011).

Al Kooheji, who has been sidelined without sponsorship for almost a year, explained how he was lured to don on his leathers and helmet, “A couple of days ago I got a call from Gernot [Dobida] who told me to take my leathers and helmet to Dubai Autodrome for the test day. I told him that I had no bike and hadn’t raced for a year.”

“No problem he said just be there. Today I arrived at the track and Gernot, Aldrin Samuel and Bassem Wazazi had organized a stock Yamaha R1 for me to ride. They paid my tyres and entry. Amazing,” explained Al Kooheji.

“Thanks to the guys, they pulled it off, they got me back and I am here for this race. The bike is stock, the foot-pegs are scraping but everyone is helping with the setup and I look forwarded to racing again. We will see what can be done for the rest of the championship. For now it is really good to be here and I am focused on this,” he added.

Last season Al Kooheji contested the opening round of the UAE Sportbike Championship which he won before taking his campaign to Qatar where he experienced rotten luck with two blown engines, which put an end to his season.

Al Kooheji was the 2008/2009 UAE Sportbike champion and has been a frequent visit to the top step of the Dubai Autodrome podium. This Friday he faces his benefactor Dobida riding a Honda in the 1000 Class, along with Emirati ace Ahmed Al Lanjawi on his Suzuki and BMW mounted  Nuwar Al Shaiba.

There will be two sprint races on the day for Motorcity UAE Sportbikes, featuring the 1000 Class and the 600 Class.

Also on the bill are races for Total UAE Touring Cars and the NGK UAE GT Championship. Entrance on the day is free to all, with access to the paddock and main grandstand, giving race fans unprecedented access to drivers, teams and cars.
