Al Wahda made a perfect start to their Gulf Club Championship campaign after registering a fine 2-0 victory over Al Khuraitiat in their opening of Group B.

After a goalless first half at the Grand Hamad Stadium in Qatar, manager Josef Hickersberger’s team talk seemed to do the trick as the UAE side stepped on the gas.

On 58 minutes striker Ismail Matar opened the scoring as he breached the defence before easily slotting the ball to the right of keeper Khalifa Abu Bakr.

Al Khuraitiat responded with a move involving Jesse John and Abdullah al-Battat, only for the latter’s shot to drift wide.

The Qataris were left up against it, though, when the Abu Dhabi team bagged their second. This time Matar turned provider as he threaded a ball through a slack home defence for strike partner Fernando Baiano to finish.

Wahda have also been drawn alongside Kuwaiti side Al Arabi in Group with the top twos team from each of the four groups qualifying for the quarter-finals.
